Eels mature slowly and are overfished in many parts of the world, causing some populations to collapse. This is problematic because eels play a vital role in supporting mussel populations, which act as natural water filters. Furthermore, eels readily absorb and store harmful chemicals and pollutants. This is such a significant problem that in some areas, residents are advised to eat eel no more than once a year.

In some cases, these fish are simply called "catfish" and should be avoided. According to a 2016 study, seventy to eighty percent of these fish were infected with the Vibrio bacteria, which causes most cases of shellfish poisoning.
