1. Tilapia
Did you know that in some ways, eating tilapia is worse than eating bacon? In fact, switching to eating more farmed fish like tilapia leads to highly inflammatory diets, according to a 2008 study published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association.

Scientists at Wake Forest University School of Medicine say tilapia is one of the most consumed fish in America. The problem is that it contains very little beneficial omega-3 fatty acids and, perhaps worse, a lot of pro-inflammatory omega-6 fatty acids.

Persistently high levels of inflammation in the body can exacerbate the symptoms of autoimmune diseases and may be linked to chronic conditions such as heart disease, cancer, and diabetes.

If you must eat this fish, avoid tilapia from China, where farming practices are particularly concerning. Better sources include the United States, Canada, the Netherlands, Ecuador, and Peru.

Of course, wild-caught tilapia is better than farmed fish, but it is very difficult to find.

1.1 Atlantic cod

The problem with Atlantic cod is more about the environment and fish populations than human health. The species was heavily fished for over a thousand years, and in the late 1990s, the Atlantic cod fishery collapsed. Although the Atlantic cod fishery has declined significantly since then, the population has struggled to recover. Experts agree that the collapse in fishing has caused lasting changes in the North Atlantic food chain, and the species is now classified as vulnerable.
